Parents Evening

Since September the students in Year 7 have made excellent progress and have covered a wide range of subjects.  You have already received reports that tell you what level your son/daughter has been working at throughout the year.  We are now in a good position to give you an up-to-date appraisal of their academic progress.

Links between home and College as part of the campaign for success are essential.  I am keen to see all the parents of our Year 7 students as I know you will want to play a key role in the future of your child to help them gain the highest possible levels of attainment.

I therefore would like to invite you to:

Year 7 Parents’ Evening

Wednesday 30th May 2012 3.30pm – 7.30pm

Please note this date is a change from the original date given in September.

You can meet with the subject teachers to share and discuss successes, worries or concerns

Miss Thorpe and I will also be available during the evening to discuss progress, listen to comments and continue the partnership between home and College.

The indicators of attainment, achievement, attendance, rewards and commendation for the current Year 7 cohort are excellent and they are sustaining a healthy attitude to learning.  We are optimistic that they will prove to be one of the highest achieving Year Groups in Minsthorpe history.

Your child will be given an appointment sheet in order to make appointments at a time which is convenient to you.  Please advise your child as to the times, which would be most suitable to for you to attend.  Please would you complete the slip below and return it to College as soon as possible.

I hope you will make every effort to attend with your son/daughter.

When you arrive at the Science and Design Technology block please sign in, you will be issued with a plan of where to locate teaching staff.

We very much look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 30th May 2012

Congratulations to
Aiden Wright for winning the ICT Web Banner competition.

The Web Banners were made as part of the ICT Year 8 Fireworks Curriculum, where students had to use their creative skills alongside their ICT knowledge.  In recognition of his efforts, Ms Benson Head of ICT has decided to showcase Aiden’s Web Banner on the Minsthorpe website for students and parents to see.

‘Students make a PACT to improve communities’

Minsthorpe students are having their say in how their communities in South Elmsall, South Kirkby and Upton should be run. The proactive students have formed their own Junior Police and Communities Together (PACT) group with the help of Safer Schools Partnership Officer PC Simon Newton and Wakefield and District Housing (WDH). The new initiative will complement the existing PACT meetings between police, WDH and residents, and bring a younger voice to decisions on how to improve safety in local communities. The first official Junior PACT meeting took place at Minsthorpe Community College on Friday after a successful pilot meeting before Christmas, which got a tremendous turnout from students.

Sarah Adams, Assistant Principal (Student Safety and Well-being) highlights this as yet another example of Minsthorpe students making an exceptional contribution to the safe, positive environment in which they live and learn. Students are keen to grasp the opportunities created through partnership work and this enhances their moral, social and cultural development whilst encouraging community cohesion.

Active A-level student Emilie Marsh has recently been appointed deputy member of the Youth Parliament for south east Wakefield and is keen to use the Junior PACT meetings to implement some of her ideas for the area.

Miss Marsh, 17, said: “By getting involved in PACT meetings it shows that our generation does care. Sometimes all young people are tarred with the same brush but there are plenty of us who want to get involved, change things and lead on those changes. We want to improve the student voice in schools and show them that there are ways to turn their ideas into reality. Hopefully more young people will emerge and want to get involved in different groups and projects to change their local areas.”
